FAUMUN Expert Lecture: Introduction to Public International Law

On 24 November 2025, FAUMUN had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Dr. Markus Krajewski for an expert lecture on Public International Law. The lecture provided participants with a solid foundation for understanding the legal framework that governs relations between states, international organizations, and other actors on the global stage.

Prof. Dr. Krajewski began by clarifying what distinguishes public international law from moral or political norms. He emphasized its binding nature, its decentralized system of law-making, and its reliance on state consent. The lecture explored the key subjects of international law, including states, international organizations, and the evolving role of individuals under human rights and investment law.

A major focus was placed on the sources of international law, such as international treaties, customary international law, and general principles of law, as outlined in Article 38 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice. Participants also gained insight into how international law is implemented and enforced, both at the bilateral and multilateral level.

In the second part of the lecture, Prof. Dr. Krajewski examined the role of the United Nations and its main bodies, including the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the International Court of Justice. Using recent examples, such as advisory opinions on climate change and current cases before the ICJ, the lecture demonstrated how international law is applied to real-world conflicts and global challenges.

The session offered valuable academic and practical perspectives for FAUMUN members preparing for international conferences and deepened participants’ understanding of how legal norms shape diplomacy, peace, and international cooperation. FAUMUN sincerely thanks Prof. Dr. Markus Krajewski for sharing his expertise and engaging in discussion with our members.
