The power of a speech lies not only in its message, but also in the way it is delivered. The annual speech training weekend showed us how powerful delivery can be when words are brought to life with confidence and clarity.

The training was led by Benjamin Klahr, a former FAUMUN delegate and journalist with a variety of experiences in radio and online media. His insight allowed us to look beyond the content of our speeches and focus on how our tone, gesture, and presence shape how the words are received. What at first felt like a technical exercise soon became a journey of discovering our individual speaking styles.

Over the course of the weekend, we took part in a series of practical exercises designed to improve articulation, vocal strength as well as emotional delivery. From challenging tongue twisters and vocal warm-ups to improvisation tasks, each activity pushed us to step out of our comfort zones. One of the highlights was performing an excerpt from Emma Watson’s “HeforShe” speech, where we learned how much impact can come from varying tone and pace. Seeing how differently each delegate approached the same text showed how diverse yet powerful our voices can be.

To support self-reflection and improvement, our speeches were filmed throughout the weekend. Watching ourselves back allowed us to critically assess our delivery and recognize areas for growth, an invaluable part of the learning process.

The second day shifted the focus towards adaptability. We were asked to prepare and deliver short speeches under pressure, simulating the spontaneous and fast-paced environment of Model United Nations conferences. Although challenging, these exercises taught us how to remain composed and persuasive even when we had little time to prepare.

By the end of the weekend, the difference was remarkable. Our voices were steadier, our delivery more intentional, and our confidence noticeably stronger. More than just a training, the weekend became a shared experience of growth, a chance to support one another and exchange feedback.
